Aeon Flux

So, I’ve been asking myself “why?” Why would Academy Award winner Charlize Theron want to sign up for “Aeon Flux”?
Could it be that Ms Theron is a fan of intelligent science fiction? I’m sure the makers of “Aeon Flux” thought they were doing something intelligent. This film has its roots in an animated series and it shows. As with much anime, mystical elements are grafted onto a scientific plot. Here, cloning is saddled with an analogy to Buddhism with the soul and memory fragments passed down through generations of beings. Ms Theron’s character clearly wants to break this wheel of reincarnation. If that wasn’t enough to push your boat out, there is also lots of “back to nature” prompts littered about the script.
This is not to say this is a bad thing. The combination of a violent ballet with a semi literate script can be a potent one. It worked quite well for the producers of “The Matrix”. However, this film does lack the emotional tug really necessary to pull this kind of thing off.
The effects are good but one suspects the cast spent too much time in front of a blue screen. Instead of getting performance, the director (Karyn Kusama) seems merely interested in placing actors in the appropriate place. No one will be handing out Academy Awards for this one, baby.
Of course, that might be the very reason Charlize Theron took this role. Her performance in “Monster” may have won her the big gong but I bet it really screwed with her love life. You see, deep down, actors only want to be loved. That’s why they get up on stage. Actors don’t want to admit it but it’s true. So what good is taking home Oscar when everyone thinks you look like a bag lady?
Well, you could always make a film which is one long wank fantasy featuring kinky costumes and a long string of poses designed to put all the newly reacquired assets up there for all the world to see. All that CGI enhanced flexibility should really impress the boys. Especially boys who can hide behind the peculiar notion that they are watching something intelligent.
To sum up… Cool effects. Cool Music. Pretty pictures. Pretty people. Vaguely bland. You shouldn’t, therefore, be surprised that this was produced by MTV films. What’s the story? Who gives a shit?
