Okay. We should start with the exceedingly bloody obvious.
“Reservoir Dogs”. You may have seen it. A little film that started the career of one Quentin Tarantino. Well, here is a chance to relive many of the scenes from that motion picture only this time you get to see it in Japanese. If you want to see the film in Chinese, you could always watch “City on Fire” which also clones “Reservoir Dogs” but has the good grace to have done it several years before Tarantino got around to making his.
Actually, I’m being unfair. “Score” is like “Reservoir Dogs” versus “Natural Born Killers” with all the amps set to eleven and enough guns to wage a medium sized war. Chance – the Harvey Keitel character – seems to have so many clips of ammunition stuffed down his trousers that he should look like a Penguin. He also gets to steal a couple of scenes out of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” whenever excitement lags for two and a half seconds or more.
Oh, there are no great dialogue scenes and no fabulous songs revived for your enjoyment. There is just action, action and then some more action. There is so much gunfire that one must assume the inferiority of Japanese weaponry or the extreme toughness of their criminals. I mean, these guys just take one Peckinpah style hit after another and just keep on coming. They lose more blood than a hospital full of vampires.
Though this film is as mad as a bag full of ferrets on seriously bad party drugs, I have to confess I enjoyed it. It doesn’t give you a chance to breathe – let alone slag it off for all its stolen moments. I shouldn’t recommend it but I will. It would be petty not too.
I mean, no one tells you not to see “A Bug’s Life” because you’ve already seen “The Seven Samurai” and “The Magnificent Seven”. Nobody is going to tell you not to watch “Last Man Standing” because of “A Fistful of Dollars” or “Yojimbo”. Maybe someone should.
